Meet 'o1-pro,' OpenAI's most expensive AI model ever
What's the story
OpenAI has launched a new and improved version of its o1 "reasoning" AI model, called the o1-pro. The advanced model has been integrated into the company's developer API.
The o1-pro promises to provide consistently better responses by using more computing power than o1.
As of now, the premium offering is only available to select developers who have spent at least $5 on OpenAI API services.
Cost breakdown
Pricing strategy for o1-pro
The cost of using the o1-pro model is astronomically higher than other OpenAI models.
The company charges $150 for every million tokens (roughly 750,000 words) fed into the model and $600 for every million tokens generated by it.
This is double OpenAI's GPT-4.5 for input and 10 times the standard o1 model.
User feedback
Mixed reviews for the new model
Despite OpenAI's confidence in the o1-pro, initial user feedback has been mixed.
The model, which has been available on OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot platform ChatGPT for ChatGPT Pro subscribers since December last year, struggled with tasks like solving Sudoku puzzles and understanding simple optical illusion jokes.
Additionally, internal benchmarks from late last year indicated that while the o1-pro performed slightly better than the standard o1 on coding and math problems, it did not show significant improvement in these areas.
