OpenAI severs ties with two researchers amid confidentiality issues
OpenAI, the organization behind AI chatbot ChatGPT, has reportedly parted ways with two of its researchers for leaking data. The Information disclosed that Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov were ordered to leave following an internal investigation. The specifics of this investigation remain undisclosed. Aschenbrenner, a significant figure in OpenAI's safety team, had close connections with the company's chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever.
Company undergoing turbulent times
This incident follows a period of internal turmoil for OpenAI. In an unexpected development last November, the board ousted CEO Sam Altman, a decision that Sutskever later regretted. This move sparked widespread dissatisfaction among employees, leading to threats of a mass exodus if Sutskever as well as other board members involved in Altman's dismissal did not resign.
Researchers' contributions to OpenAI before departure
Aschenbrenner, a Columbia University graduate at just 19 years old, was known for his dedication to safe AI development. Before joining OpenAI, he was employed with Future Fund, a philanthropic organization associated with the effective altruism movement. Izmailov, the other researcher asked to leave, was initially part of OpenAI's safety team before transitioning to the reasoning research division.
OpenAI's internal conflicts
These departures mark the first significant staff changes since Sam Altman joined the company's board in March 2024. Prior to his unexpected removal as CEO, an internal investigation commissioned by the OpenAI board had cleared Altman of any misconduct. The company continues to grapple with internal disagreements concerning the rapid progression of AI and potential safety risks.
