OnePlus' 2019 flagship to get 5G support, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
OnePlus' 2019 flagship will be the first smartphone to be powered by the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, according to Pete Lau, CEO, OnePlus. This flagship will also be the company's first 5G-ready smartphone that will be launched in Europe in early 2019 with EE network. Here's everything you need to know.
OnePlus has used Qualcomm chips since its first smartphone
Since its inception, OnePlus devices have been powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800-series chipsets. The first-ever OnePlus smartphone, the OnePlus One came with a 28nm Snapdragon 801 chipset while the latest OnePlus smartphone - the OnePlus 6T - runs on 10nm Snapdragon 845 processor. And keeping up with the tradition, OnePlus' 2019 flagship will get the 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset.
Snapdragon 855 is the best and only choice: Pete Lau
"OnePlus only makes flagship smartphones, and we believe that Snapdragon 855 is the best and only choice. We are thrilled by its powerful performance and 5G capabilities. OnePlus will continue to bring its users the best technology and the best user experience possible," said Lau.
Here's a look at Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, based on 7nm design, is touted to offer three times more AI performance than Snapdragon 845 and 5G support via Snapdragon X50 modem. The chipset also features the first Computer Vision ISP to enable new photography and videography features. Lastly, the chipset will assist the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor which uses ultrasonic waves for in-display fingerprint scanners rather than light.
OnePlus now eyes Europe by launching the first 5G-ready smartphone
OnePlus' 5G smartphone to launch in early 2019
OnePlus has confirmed that its upcoming 5G-ready smartphone will be an entirely new series and not the OnePlus 7. The company has partnered with EE network to launch the first 5G-ready flagship in Europe by early 2019. Interestingly, this move will place OnePlus in a sweet spot to tap into the European markets with a price-friendly, high-end 5G-ready smartphone.
The 5G Race
Xiaomi has already teased its 5G-compatible Mi Mix 3 flagship while Samsung is gearing to launch its Galaxy S10 5G variant by early 2019. Further, Huawei, OPPO and Vivo are also expected to launch their 5G-ready smartphones by next year. Interestingly, we may only see a 5G- compatible iPhone sometime in 2020 considering the Cupertino giant is relying on Intel for 5G modems.
