OnePlus 6T's in-display fingerprint scanner gets faster with each unlock
Just last month, OnePlus unveiled its latest flagship, OnePlus 6T, and joined the bandwagon of OEMs offering in-display fingerprint scanners. The technology offers a whole new screen-unlocking method but fails to match the speed of regular fingerprint scanners - a problem with all fingerprint-on-display devices. But, surprisingly, OnePlus claims slow speed is just an early trait and will go away with time. Here's how.
How fingerprint scanners will get faster?
In a recent blog post explaining the screen unlocking method behind OnePlus 6T, Yale Liu, a OnePlus software engineer, said the scanner integrated with the display of the phone will get faster over time. He said it records fingerprint data every time the user places his finger to unlock the phone and adds that information to already registered data.
Information registered initially is upgraded to increase speed
"Every time a user successfully unlocks the phone with their fingerprint, the sensor also records areas of the finger that weren't registered in the initial fingerprint setup stage," Liu said, noting that this ultimately helps the phone unlock faster over time.
Also, the scanner's algorithms consider minor fingerprint changes
Apart from adding previous unregistered parts of a fingerprint, the algorithms bundled with the technology also consider if there are slight changes in the user's fingerprint. For instance, if the thumb is cut or wet, the scanner's algorithms will register that information after unlocking this screen once. This way, all future unlocking attempts will become faster in those conditions.
