What is Ola Bharat Cell?
Ola Electric has unveiled its innovative battery technology, called 'Bharat Cell.' It is a 4680 Li-ion cell—a type of cylindrical lithium-ion battery characterized by its dimensions: 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height. The new cell offers a significant improvement in energy storage and charging capabilities than 2170 cells currently used in Ola's electric scooters. Backed by over 70 patents, this new technology will be incorporated into Ola's electric scooters from April 2025 onward.
A milestone in India's energy revolution
Ola Electric's CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, has described the introduction of the Bharat Cell as a significant step toward transforming India's energy landscape. The company has ambitious plans for cell manufacturing, with a phased approach that aims to achieve a capacity of 5GWh by 2024 and scale up to 20GWh by 2026. The ultimate goal is to reach an impressive 100GWh by 2030. By increasing the energy density and production efficiency, the cost per kilowatt-hour of the battery can be lowered.
Bharat Cell secures BIS certification
The Bharat Cell has received the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, a crucial endorsement for its quality and safety. With this certification, Ola Electric is set to intensify testing at its gigafactory over the next six to nine months. Aggarwal expressed confidence that the company would begin equipping its electric vehicles (EVs) with these new cells by early next year, marking a significant moment in India's EV sector.
