Say goodbye to influencers? AI characters with emotions are here
NVIDIA-backed AI firm, Synthesia, has recently introduced its latest innovation, "Expressive Avatars." This advanced technology in video production features AI-generated digital characters that can mimic human emotions based on text inputs. The new development could potentially reduce the reliance on social media influencers for marketing as well as traditional video production tools such as cameras, microphones, and extensive editing.
Synthesia's unique process in creating expressive avatars
The creation of these "Expressive Avatars" involves a distinctive process at Synthesia's studio. Actors stand against a green screen and perform as per script, aiding the AI system in learning to replicate human expressions and emotions. The effectiveness of these avatars was demonstrated using simple text inputs such as "I am happy," "I am sad," and "I am frustrated," with the AI avatar responding in corresponding emotional tones.
Synthesia's global traction and financial success
Synthesia's innovative technology has been adopted by over 55,000 businesses worldwide, including half of the Fortune 100 companies. These firms utilize the digital avatars for presentations and training videos. Since its establishment in 2017, Synthesia has secured $90 million in funding at a valuation of approximately $1 billion, making it one of Britain's leading AI unicorns. Notable investors include Accel, Kleiner Perkins, GV, FirstMark Capital, and MMC.
Synthesia's measures to prevent misuse of technology
Addressing potential misuse concerns, Synthesia has implemented measures to ensure responsible use of its technology. Publishers must register as enterprise customers and all content is subject to moderation. The company also adheres to a "Know Your Customer" process akin to banking industry standards, aimed at preventing misuse by malicious entities. As part of its commitment to security, Synthesia is preparing for global elections by implementing controls designed to prevent attempts by hostile actors to manipulate outcomes.
Synthesia's collaboration for content authenticity
Synthesia is also partnering with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, an AI consortium that focuses on implementing content credentials and digital "watermarking" techniques. These measures aim to differentiate AI-generated content from human-made content. The launch of Synthesia's "Expressive Avatars" marks a significant advancement in AI technology, blurring the line between virtual and real-world interactions. With robust security measures in place, the company is set to shape the future of digital content creation while ensuring protection against potential misuse.
