Now, talk to Google Home in Hindi: Here's how
Google's Assistant-powered smart speakers are finally getting the ability to take commands from you in Hindi. Previously, the functionality was only available on Google Assistant for smartphones, but now, you can use the same trigger phrase - 'Hey Google' or 'Ok Google' - and start talking in Hindi with Google Home and its Mini version. Here are the finer details.
Assistant to respond with uniquely Indian contexts, says Google
Google Home launched in April, but unlike Assistant on phones (which got Hindi support in March), the device only took English commands. Now, Google says the smart speaker and its more affordable, Mini version will take Hindi commands and respond with uniquely Indian contexts. Notably, the language support was spotted last week itself on several devices.
Statement from Purvi Shah, Technical Programme Manager, Google Assistant
"Our team has been hard at work teaching the Assistant on Google Home to understand Hindi, and it will now respond to you with uniquely Indian contexts," Purvi Shah said, noting that now, users can get hands-free help in Hindi to get routine things done.
Call in Hindi, use same functions
With Hindi support, Google Home will listen and respond in Hindi, but its function will largely remain unchanged. For instance, you can call Assistant in Hindi and ask for things ranging from weather information and news updates to recipes for popular dishes. Not to mention, you can even plan your commute or control smart appliances installed in your home.
How to enable Hindi language for Google Home?
In order to enable Hindi language, open the Google Home app on your smartphone, tap on the 'Account' icon at the lower right corner and go to the 'Settings' option. From there, navigate to the 'Assistant' tab and select 'Languages' to 'Add a language' and set Hindi as the first language. This would set Hindi as the primary language for Google Home.
