Nintendo is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics and video game company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Interestingly, the company was founded in 1889 as Nintendo Karuta to produce playing cards. In the 1960s, Nintendo became a public company under its current name. In 1977, it began distributing its first video game console, the Color TV-Game. Nintendo's claim to fame was the Donkey Kong game released in 1981 and the Super Mario Bros. series that started in 1985 and continues selling to this day. Since its inception, Nintendo has produced several successful game consoles including the Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo DS, and the Nintendo Wii. Its most recent offering is called the Nintendo Switch the company has also created several popular audio game franchises including the Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, and Super Smash Bros. As of September 2021, Nintendo is one of Japan's wealthiest and most valuable companies. Nintendo of America is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nintendo that was established in 1980 and is based in Redmond, Washington.
