Want something new for gaming? Try the adorable 'Playdate' console
For most of us, gaming on-the-go is all about picking a phone and spending hours on some graphics-intensive title. The PUBG fandom best explains this case, but now, there is an innovative new console that can quench your appetite for videogames without compromising your phone's performance. It is called Playdate, and here's everything you need to know about it.
What is Playdate
Developed by popular developer Panic, Playdate can be described as a cute little gaming system that comes in yellow color, and fits in the palm of your hand. It has been designed to complement the experience of existing consoles and serve as a portable gaming solution, one you could pick up anytime and start playing. Panic took 4 years to come up with Playdate.
How this gaming system works
On first look, Playdate looks like a normal console with a black-and-white screen, D-pad, and A and B buttons. The screen misses out on backlight, but Panic has emphasized it would show crystal clear images as long as there's a source of light in surroundings. Notably, Playdate also has a crank, a lever-like thing that flips out from the side and can be rotated.
Crank for some exclusive games
The crank on the side makes an intriguing part of Playdate, and the company said it would only be used in some titles, designed exclusively for the gaming system.
Playdate will get titles over the air
As for available games, Playdate will get exclusive titles, thanks to Panic's partnership with several new and experienced game developers. The company has said buyers of the console will get access to 12 free titles, with one new game showing up every week. You will see a game light flash whenever a new title is available for download over the air.
One game already announced
Panic has already announced the first of the 12 Playdate games. The title is called Crankin's Time Travel Adventure and it is all about controlling the flow of time using the crank to help Crankin' avoid obstacles and meet its date.
Shipping starts in 2020
Panic has priced Playdate at $149, which is approximately Rs. 10,350 in India. The company plans on starting pre-orders by the end of this year and shipping sometime in early 2020. However, it is worth noting that this is just for the US. There is no word on when or if the product will be available in the Indian market.
