New iPad Pro's performance nearly matches up with MacBook Pro
Apple's latest engineering marvel, the iPad Pro, packs an improved set of internals and some major hardware changes. The tablet, which comes in two screen sizes, runs on Apple's octa-core A12X Bionic chip and promises 90% faster multi-core performance than its predecessor. But, the interesting bit is that it even matches up with the MacBook Pro in terms of performance. Here's more.
What do the numbers say?
Just recently, benchmark scores demonstrating the power of the new iPad Pro showed up on GeekBench. The scores not just obliterated results from the new iPhones and previous iPads, but came pretty close to those from the 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro. It went neck and neck with the notebook in terms of single-core performance and lagged just by a small bit in multi-core tests.
What were the scores?
In the single-core test, the new iPad Pro scored around 5,000, matching up with six-core Intel Core i7-powered variants of the MacBook Pro, MacRumors reported. However, the in multi-core test, the tablet scored 18,000, which is way higher than other iOS devices in the arena, but still some 3,000 less than the scores of the MacBook Pro.
Either way, this makes things very interesting
Benchmarks don't tell the whole story, but considering the element of pricing, this definitely makes things interesting. In India, the MacBook Pro model we are talking about costs about Rs. 2,30,000 with 512GB of SSD. This is much higher than the price of a fully-loaded 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which costs Rs. 1,71,900 (1,87,800 including Smart Keyboard Folio) and offers 1TB of storage.
Compelling case of A-series chips in future MacBooks
Yes, the MacBook Pro model offers 16GB of RAM and the iPad's 1TB variant only offers 6GB, but the close-matching performance does indicate that Apple could bring its own ARM-based A-series chips into future MacBooks.
