New Apple Pencil to feature haptic feedback and gestures
Apple is set to host its 'Let Loose' event on May 7, where it will introduce the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models. The event will also showcase the next generation of iPad accessories, including an updated Magic Keyboard and a new Apple Pencil. As reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the new Pencil will feature haptic feedback for the first time.
How will the haptic feedback work?
The new Apple Pencil will offer haptic feedback, a feature that adjusts the feel of the stylus based on the tool selected in the current drawing app. For example, selecting crayon mode may make the Pencil feel rougher and heavier. Additionally, Gurman reports that this innovative pencil will include additional gestures for increased versatility, such as a 'squeeze' gesture that summons a contextual menu based on the current task.
First update to iPad hardware lineup in 18 months
The May 7 event marks Apple's first update to its iPad hardware lineup in 18 months, having skipped 2023 altogether. The new iPad Pro lineup will feature OLED displays and possibly an M4 chip. For the first time, the iPad Air will also be updated, adding a larger 12.9-inch size. This event is set to address issues with Apple's iPad business which has been described as "just okay" but weak.
iPad lineup overhaul amid stagnant sales figures
Despite generating $7.78 billion in the last quarter, iPad sales are not growing due to market saturation and consumer confusion over the numerous models and options available. To address this issue, Apple is planning an overhaul of its iPad lineup at its spring event next week. The focus will be on two iPad models: the high-end iPad Pro and mid-range iPad Air, both set for significant updates including OLED screens and new chips.
