Norwegian start-up unveils humanoid robot to take on Tesla Optimus
Norwegian robotics firm 1X Technologies (1XT) has introduced its latest creation, Neo Beta. This bipedal humanoid robot is designed specifically for serving as an assistant at home. The unveiling comes after the company secured over $100 million in funding from OpenAI and EQT Ventures, Europe's leading technology start-up-focused capital fund. Despite its somewhat eerie appearance due to its faceless design and jumpsuit attire, Neo Beta is set to undergo pilot trials in select homes later this year.
A compact and lightweight home assistant
Neo Beta is a consumer-focused robot that stands at five feet four inch (1.65 meters) and weighs just 30kg. It has a carrying capacity of up to 20kg. This makes it significantly smaller and lighter than its industry counterparts like Tesla's Optimus and Agility's Digit robots, which offer similar carrying capacities but weigh between 56.5-63.5kg.
Neo Beta's human-like features and capabilities
Neo Beta is designed with soft foam that mimics human musculature, giving it a more human-like appearance. The robot can walk, jog, climb stairs, and navigate its surroundings while continuously improving its efficiency through data accumulation. In certain situations, owners can remotely control Neo Beta's vision and control systems.
Safety measures and potential concerns
1XT has intentionally designed Neo Beta with a lighter weight and foam musculature for safety reasons, acknowledging that robots will surely collide with humans or objects in their environment. However, the ability to remotely control the unit raises questions about security. Concerns have been voiced regarding the robustness of the remote connection between the robot and controller, and potential risks of hijacking for illicit activities.
A step forward in AI and robotics
Despite potential concerns, the development of Neo Beta represents a significant advancement in AI and robotics. It could be particularly beneficial for individuals with reduced mobility or motor skills. The pricing and availability details for Neo Beta are yet to be announced.
