Microsoft Paint revamped with new AI-based image editing tools
Microsoft is gearing up to roll out some cool AI-powered features to its Paint and Photos apps on Copilot Plus PCs. These new tools, called Generative Fill and Generative Erase, are all about making image editing easier and less reliant on hi-end software. They let you add or remove stuff in your pictures with precision, much like some tools in Adobe Photoshop.
Generative Fill and Erase: A closer look at new tools
The Generative Fill and Erase tools come with a brush that you can adjust in size, making it super easy to edit specific parts of an image. The Generative Erase tool is perfect for getting rid of unwanted stuff, like background clutter. It's kind of like the Magic Eraser feature on Google's Pixel phones. Meanwhile, Generative Fill lets you add new AI-created elements to your images just by typing a text description, similar to a tool in Photoshop.
Enhancements to Microsoft's Cocreator tool
These new features are an extension of the Cocreator tool for Paint, which was launched for Copilot Plus PCs earlier this year. The Cocreator tool can generate images using a combination of text prompts and reference sketches. Microsoft has updated the diffusion-based model that powers these features to improve output quality and speed. The company has also added "built-in moderation" to prevent misuse of these tools.
Microsoft Photos app to get Generative Erase, Super-Resolution features
Along with Paint, Microsoft's Photos app is also getting Generative Erase. Plus, there's a fresh Super-Resolution feature that uses on-device AI to make those blurry or pixelated images look sharp. You can even boost the image resolution up to eight times its original size and tweak the enhancement level using a slider. Microsoft claims this tool can boost your images "up to 4K within seconds."
