MIUI 10 Global ROM launched: Here's everything you should know
Alongside the launch of Redmi Y2 in India, Xiaomi has unveiled the Global ROM version of its latest OS, the MIUI 10. Based on Android, it has been designed with the focus on four key elements - speed, design, sound, and AI Portrait feature. Thus, you get enhanced still photography, full-screen display gesture, an overall faster experience, among other updates. Here are the details.
MIUI 10 Global ROM includes AI Portrait feature
To begin with, MIUI 10 Global ROM gets AI Portrait feature that adds bokeh effect to your photos by identifying foreground and blurring out the background. The feature will initially be available only for the front camera and will later be released for the rear camera. It's a big add-on for MIUI 10-based smartphones that come with a single camera setup.
MIUI 10 gets full-screen gestures, redesigned Recents view
With MIUI 10, Xiaomi is introducing iPhone X-like full-screen display gestures that make handling more convenient for devices with taller displays. The latest Xiaomi OS also has a redesigned Recents view which gets a new vertical cover flow of apps instead of horizontal. You can swipe a card to close an app, while long pressing it will show more options.
Other noticeable changes include new system apps, redesigned notifications panel
Alongside the major design changes discussed before, Xiaomi has restructured the screen layout and regrouped apps based on their types. Moreover, with MIUI 10, you now get new system apps such as Weather and Calendar and a revamped notification panel to complement the full-screen experience. Lastly, the default Notes app has also been updated and now you can record voice memos within the app.
No two notification sounds on MIUI 10 are same: Xiaomi
In terms of updates in the sound options, the MIUI 10 Global ROM gets natural sounds and ambient noises. Moreover, a new water droplet sound has been added for notifications, and according to Xiaomi, no two notification sounds on MIUI 10 are the same.
MIUI 10 also gets some India-centric features
The MIUI 10 Global ROM will offer refreshed apps including Mi Music and Mi Video and a new Browser app which will support popular Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). Further, the camera app will double up as a Paytm QR code scanner for quick payments. Indian users will also get access to a quick menu tab with details of several businesses and services.
Here's the list of Xiaomi devices compatible with MIUI 10
The MIUI 10 Global ROM Beta will be available for Mi Mix 2, Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5s, 5, 4, 3, Mi Note 2, Mi Max 2, and Max. In the Redmi range, compatible devices are Note 5, 5 Pro, 5A, 5A Prime, Note 3, Note 4X, 4 (TW), Note 3 and Redmi 5, 5A, 4, 4A, 3S, Y2, Y1-Lite, and Y1.
It is coming soon
According to reports, the MIUI 10 Global ROM Beta will be rolled out for compatible smartphones starting mid-June. However, for the stable build of MIUI 10, Xiaomi hasn't specified any timeline but mentioned that the stable version will arrive sometime around September.
