Microsoft announces early access to next Windows 11 update
Microsoft is preparing to launch its next significant update for Windows 11, which is currently available for early access via its Release Preview ring. This stage represents the final testing phase before the 24H2 update becomes universally accessible to all Windows 11 users. The forthcoming update boasts a variety of new features including HDR background support, an energy saver mode, sudo for Windows, and Rust in the Windows kernel.
How to access the latest update?
To access the final version of this update, users need to navigate to the Windows Insider option located in the Windows Update section of Windows 11. Following this, they must adhere to the prompts to sign up for the Windows Insider Program, and select Release Preview. This process allows users early access to test and experience new features before they are rolled out universally.
Check out key features
One of the standout features in the Windows 11 24H2 update is HDR background support, enabling users to use JXR images as their wallpaper background. For multi-monitor users, Windows 11 will adapt the wallpaper on a per-display basis. The energy-saving modes have also been revamped, bringing a new mode that reduces system performance to conserve battery life on laptops, and power on desktop PCs.
Some developer-friendly add-ons
The latest update includes a built-in sudo command, a boon for developers as it allows them to run elevated tools, directly from an unelevated console session. The sudo command can be configured in three modes: new window, with input disabled, and inline. This feature enhances the flexibility and control developers have over their work environment, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
Additional features and updates
The update also introduces the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives in File Explorer, a scrollable view of Quick Settings flyout above the taskbar, and an AI-powered Voice Clarity feature that removes background noise during calls or audio recording. The built-in Copilot assistant has been updated as well. It now has a dedicated button on the right corner of the system tray and, understands more commands for changing settings and activating Windows features.
