Microsoft's GitHub reverses database changes after disrupting its services
GitHub, the renowned code-hosting platform owned by Microsoft, experienced a worldwide service disruption recently. The company attributed this outage to a modification in its database infrastructure. In an attempt to rectify the situation, GitHub has now fully reversed this update. "We have fully rolled-back the changes to database infrastructure and mitigated the impact. All services are now fully operational," the platform said in an advisory on its status page.
Outage impacts multiple GitHub services
The service disruption began around 04:30am IST today, as per GitHub's statement. The outage affected several services including GitHub Actions, Pages, Issues, Pull Requests, Copilot and Codespaces, Packages, Git operations, and Webhooks. Additionally, both the main website (GitHub.com) and the GitHub API were inaccessible during this period. At one point during the outage, users attempting to access these services were met with an error message featuring a unicorn.
Recovery efforts: Rollback restored normalcy
By 23:29 UTC, GitHub decided to reverse the changes made to its infrastructure in an attempt to restore normalcy. The process began at 23:45 UTC, with the company reporting some improvement in service health and later fully mitigated the impact.
