Microsoft unveils special controller designed for Xbox gamers with disabilities
Microsoft has unveiled the Proteus Controller, recognizing the Global Accessibility Awareness Day. The modular video game controller kit is specifically designed to enhance the gaming experience for Xbox users with disabilities. The $299 (nearly ₹25,000) controller is a creation of ByoWave, a peripheral company, under the "Designed for Xbox" program. The unique design comprises small cubes with interchangeable faceplates that include controller buttons, a directional pad, and analog sticks.
It offers over 100 customizable configurations
The Proteus Controller offers a "snap and play" feature, allowing over 100 configurations and LED lighting variations. This flexibility enables one-handed gamers and other players with disabilities to customize the controller to their comfort. The wireless controller also features remappable buttons for a more individualized experience via a companion app, further enhancing its customization and adaptability.
Proteus Controller kit includes these items
The Proteus Controller kit includes a USB-C charging cable, a Bluetooth dongle, along with additional components such as left and right handles for crafting a classic gamepad, and two sizable one-button peripherals.
Compatibility and preorder details
At launch, the Proteus Controller will be compatible with Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 and 11. ByoWave has stated that it will not support PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch at this time but is open to future partnerships. The controller is expected to ship this fall but is currently available for preorder on ByoWave's website at a discounted price of $255 (around ₹21,300).
Microsoft's continued commitment to accessible gaming
In addition to the Proteus Controller, Microsoft is also updating its $99.99 Xbox Adaptive Controller, which was released in 2018 to assist players in building adaptive gaming setups. The update will allow each USB port to support up to 12 buttons, a second stick, and a hat switch. This firmware will be available publicly in the next few months but will roll out over the next couple of weeks to Xbox Insiders.
