Meta to disclose AI training data usage to Brazilian users
Meta has announced its plan to inform Brazilian users about the use of their personal data in training generative artificial intelligence (AI). This decision comes in response to a request from Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). Starting today, Meta will send notifications via email and through its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. Users will have the option to decline the use of their data for this purpose.
ANPD's suspension and Meta's compliance
In July, the ANPD had temporarily halted Meta's new privacy policy concerning the use of personal data for AI training. However, this suspension was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to provide the necessary disclosures. During the same period, Meta voluntarily stopped using generative AI tools in Brazil. These tools were used to generate AI-created stickers for WhatsApp, which has its second-largest user base in Brazil.
Meta's response to AI tool suspension
Meta had chosen to suspend the use of these tools during its discussions with the ANPD, to address any concerns about its use of generative AI. When asked by Reuters if it plans to reinstate these tools now that the ANPD has lifted its suspension, Meta did not provide a direct answer. Instead, it reiterated that the suspension was implemented while it was in dialogue with the ANPD.
