You could soon use AI to generate comments on Instagram
What's the story
Meta is said to be testing a new feature that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to create comments for Instagram posts.
The feature was spotted by Jonah Manzano, an X user known for testing social media features.
He spotted a "Write with Meta AI" prompt on Instagram, which provides users with AI-generated suggestions for comments on their friends' posts.
This comes as part of Meta's recent trend of adding advanced AI capabilities to its apps.
Operation
How will the feature work?
The AI-generated comment feature can be triggered by tapping a pencil icon next to the text bar under a post.
Once triggered, Meta AI scans the photo and generates three comment suggestions.
For example, if you want to comment on a photo of someone smiling with thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI could suggest "Cute living room setup," "Love the cozy atmosphere," or "Great photo shoot location."
You can refresh for more suggestions if you don't find these satisfactory.
Official statement
Meta's comments on the new feature
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the testing of this feature in an email to TechCrunch.
"We regularly test more features for you to use Meta AI across our apps," they said.
Outside of DMs, users will find Meta AI in comments, feed, groups, and search to enhance their experiences, the spokesperson added.
However, Meta has not disclosed the availability of this test feature.
Concerns
User reactions and potential impact
The introduction of AI-generated comments on Instagram has raised concerns among users who prefer authentic interactions.
Many believe that their friends deserve genuine comments rather than AI-generated ones, which could be seen as inauthentic.
This new feature comes after Meta's previous experiment with AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook last year.
However, it remains uncertain when or if Meta plans to roll out this feature more widely.
