Meta, Spotify working on music-sharing feature for Instagram
Meta and Spotify are reportedly collaborating on a new music-sharing feature for the Instagram app. This information was revealed by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who is known for discovering features in development. The proposed feature would enable users to share their current Spotify tracks through Instagram's Notes function. However, it's important to note that this discovery does not guarantee an imminent public release of the feature.
How the new feature would work
The potential new feature was revealed in a screenshot shared by Paluzzi on Meta's Threads. It displayed an option for users to "continuously share" their Spotify music, marking a departure from the current method of selecting songs from Instagram's catalog. The message also clarified that users can stop sharing at any time. This development seems to be an expansion of Instagram's existing ability to share 30-second song clips via Notes, introduced last year.
A potential partnership with Spotify
A collaboration with Spotify could potentially automate song postings on Instagram, providing content even when users are using other apps. This feature is similar to the social networking activity currently available within Spotify's app. For instance, Spotify allows users to "connect with Facebook" and view what their friends are streaming in a separate tab on its desktop app.
Indications of a Meta-Spotify collaboration
Technologist Chris Messina recently noticed that Instagram had added a "SpotifyiOS.framework" component to its app, suggesting a possible integration between the two platforms. This discovery was made around the release of Instagram version v.338.0 over a month ago. Messina also speculated that Instagram could integrate this offering with Spotify to compete more effectively with TikTok in music discovery.
Meta and Spotify's history of collaboration
Meta and Spotify have a history of working together on music features. In 2021, they collaborated on music initiatives that included a miniplayer on Facebook for streaming Spotify directly from the app. Both companies share common concerns about Apple's App Store monopoly, which they believe hinders their ability to manage their own in-app payments and app distribution.
