Meta to shutdown its Slack and Teams competitor next year
Meta has confirmed plans to discontinue Workplace, its office communication platform, by August 31, 2025. The decision was announced by Meta spokesperson Ashley Zandy and reported by TechCrunch. Originally launched as Facebook @ Work in 2016 after two years of internal use, the platform was designed as an alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams. Despite the public discontinuation, Zandy assured that there would be no changes regarding its internal use at Meta.
In 2026, all data on the platform will be deleted
Starting September, Meta will offer a 50% discount on the service. The company has also proposed to assist customers in transitioning to Workvivo, a platform owned by Zoom. From September 1, 2025, Workplace will transition into a read- and export-only mode until June 1, 2026. After this date, access to the platform will be terminated and all data will be deleted.
Reasons behind Meta's decision to discontinue Workplace
The decision to shut down Workplace comes after a significant slowdown in its development. This was largely due to the return of employees to physical offices following the Covid-19 pandemic and the departure of several key employees. The increasingly competitive market for remote work tools, with strong contenders like Microsoft Teams, Google Workplace, and new entrants like Zoom Workplace, also contributed to Meta's decision to wind down Workplace after a decade of development.
