Malware: 2,000 modems affected, BSNL urges customers to change password
BSNL has urged its broadband subscribers to change the default password in the wake of a malware attack on its system earlier this week. Nearly 2,000 modems, where users hadn't changed the default password "admin", had been affected. "The situation has been addressed to a great extent. (Customers) shouldn't be worried once they have (changed the password)," said Chairman Anupam Shrivastava.
More about the attack
The attack happened earlier this week. According to Shrivastava, the malware hit modems where the default password hadn't been changed and started modifying the access codes so subscribers couldn't log in. It hadn't impacted BSNL's core network, Shrivastava assured. However, contrary to PTI reports, The Hindu put the number of affected users at over 60,000 in Karnataka alone.
How can you reset the modem?
One option is to reset the modem to its default settings: open the modem page at http://192.168.1.1; enter subscriber details and password; go to 'access management' tab; click on 'activate acl'; and save. Reboot the modem for the changes to take effect.
Earlier, 100mn Jio subscribers' data was reportedly compromised
On July 10, personal details of Jio subscribers including name, mobile number, email-id, circle, SIM activation date and most importantly Aadhaar details were leaked online in one of India's biggest possible data breaches. Jio said the claims were "unverified and unsubstantiated" and was investigating the matter. Based on the first impression, the data appeared inauthentic to them.
