LG announces Velvet, its new bet at reviving phone business
In a bid to revive its slumping mobile business, LG has announced a new product roadmap that will emphasize on "distinctive designs" and "expressive names." As part of the strategy, the company has revealed its first product - LG Velvet - and shared a couple of highlights about its design. However, details about the hardware remain unknown as of now. Here's more.
What's there in a name? Expression, says LG
LG has introduced a new branding strategy for its mobile devices, "moving away from alphanumerical designations in favor of familiar and expressive names." Hence, there won't be any G-series or V-series handsets, and even the "ThinQ" prefix might get dropped. As for "Velvet", the company says the new moniker evokes "images of lustrous smoothness and premium softness," two key characteristics of the new handset.
LG's new design philosophy to focus on 'tactile elegance'
According to LG, modern-day smartphones are "becoming more and more alike and difficult to distinguish by technical specifications." Hence, to set it apart from others, the company will adopt "distinctive designs and 'tactile' elegance."
LG Velvet to feature a Raindrop camera, aggressively curved screen
A couple of days back, LG gave us a brief idea of the design language for its upcoming phones. Based on those renders, the LG Velvet will feature an aggressively curved screen and with rounded corners. However, it remains to be seen where the front camera will be placed. As for the rear camera, the multi-lens arrangement will have a unique "Raindrop" shape.
LG Velvet is likely to be a mid-range handset
According to rumors, this new product lineup is likely to replace the mid-range LG G-series of smartphones. However, there are no hardware details to back up that claim. The word on the grapevine also suggests that LG Velvet could launch on May 15.
