Apple Macs with M4 chip: Here's when to expect them
Apple is gearing up to introduce a new range of Macs later this year, likely at an October event. The upcoming release will encompass various models including the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac, followed by MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro at a later date. The new models are expected to use different variants of the latest Apple Silicon, the M4 chip, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
M4 chip for MacBook Pro
All existing MacBook Pro models will be updated with the new chip. The more affordable 14-inch version will feature a standard M4 chip while premium 14-inch and 16-inch models will boast M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. No significant changes beyond the customary chip upgrade are anticipated for these devices. They are expected to retain a similar design and features as the outgoing models while improving performance.
Chip upgrade for Mac mini and iMac
The Mac mini is set for a design overhaul, with a significantly smaller model that resembles the Apple TV 4K. It could be equipped with either an M4 or a more powerful M4 Pro chip. The iMac is also expected to receive the M4 chip by year-end, with specific details about this update still under wraps. However, there is speculation about potential USB-C compatibility.
MacBook Air set for refresh in 2025
The MacBook Air, updated with the M3 chip in March this year, is set for another upgrade to the M4 chip in Q1 2025. Both 13-inch and 15-inch versions will be updated simultaneously. No significant hardware changes are expected beyond this chip upgrade.
Mac Studio, Mac Pro to follow
The last models to receive the M4 chip will be the high-end Mac Studio and Mac Pro. These updates are expected around mid-2025, possibly during WWDC. These machines are likely to be the first to feature an M4 Ultra chip, with a more affordable M4 Max option for at least Mac Studio. The Mac Studio might see a size reduction similar to the redesigned Mac mini. The Mac Pro could also undergo a redesign featuring a new form-factor.
