JioPhone 3 likely to launch on August 12: Details here
Over the last two years, Reliance JioPhone and JioPhone 2 have taken services like WhatsApp and Facebook to the mass market. They both make an ideal alternative for expensive smartphones, but there's more to come. Case in point: Reliance Jio's August 12 Annual General Meeting (AGM), where we expect to see a new 4G feature phone, most probably JioPhone 3. Here's all about it.
MediaTek-powered JioPhone 3 likely in the works
Reliance hasn't said much about JioPhone 3, but a recent report from the Economic Times indicates the device will likely host a MediaTek chipset. TL Lee, the General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Communication business unit, told the outlet that they were working an Android Go-based smartphone for Reliance's LYF brand, but now, those plans have been switched to a 4G feature phone.
However, Lee didn't say if this device was JioPhone 3
While Lee didn't specifically mention they were working with Reliance for JioPhone 3, he did note the company is also working with KaiOS, the platform that runs on first two JioPhones. "The project [4G feature phone] is going on," he told ET, noting that "we expect to see the commercial devices available in the market within a few months, second half of this year."
Focus on smart feature phone category
Lee emphasized "smart feature phones [are] becoming relevant" with more and more people getting access to high-speed internet. "We are taking the same approach for other markets such as Africa and other emerging markets where 4G feature phones are relevant," he added while stressing on the growing demand of affordable smart feature phones, like JioPhone and Nokia 8110.
What else JioPhone 3 would have on offer
JioPhone 3 is rumored to offer a full-touchscreen display at a price well below Rs. 5,000. The device will probably come with 2GB RAM and 64GB internal storage, making a major upgrade over the JioPhone 2. It may still run on KaiOS but offer an improved front and rear-facing camera setup of 5MP + 2MP and a bigger 2,800mAh battery.
