Reliance Jio's JioFiber broadband service to go live by December
According to reports, Reliance Jio will commercially roll out its JioFiber broadband service by December 2018. The fiber-optic-based broadband service will deliver a maximum speed of 100Mbps and a minimum speed of 40Mbps. It will initially go live in 20 cities across India including Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Bhopal, and Chandigarh before targeting other Tier-I and Tier-II cities.
JioFiber to take on DTH players as well
JioFiber will also be bundled with Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services. This means that it will not only compete with broadband companies but also satellite cable providers like Tata Sky, Videocon D2H, Airtel DTH, and Dish TV. Its router, called Optical Network Termination (ONT) box, will be a smart networking equipment that will offer all-in-one bundled services.
ONT box can be connected to multiple devices
The ONT box, which will be installed at users' homes, will have optical fiber-out ports that users will be able to connect to a television or any other device. It will enable high-speed data consumption activities like 4K video playback and online gaming. The ONT box can feature two to eight LAN ports depending on its model.
JioFiber is an entirely fiber optic-based service
Reliance Jio claims that with JioFiber, broadband connectivity will reach each individual house, unlike other companies that only provide fiber connections till a particular building and use traditional ethernet cables thereafter which reduces speed and causes disturbances.
JioFiber plans to be unlimited like Jio's current mobile plans
To avail the JioFiber service, users will have to pay a deposit of Rs. 4,500. The JioFiber broadband plans will reportedly be unlimited. Users will also have the option to avail a special plan that will offer internet speeds of 1Gbps.
