    What's the story

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has released the first ever image captured by the recently launched Cartosat-2 satellite.

India's 100th satellite, Cartosat-2 was successfully launched on January 12 from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh on a PSLV-C40 rocket.

The image features a small part of the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh with its Holkar Cricket Stadium standing out at the centre.

    Details

The image is from the satellite's first day after launch

As promised by ISRO, this first-day picture comes as a high-resolution scene-specific spot imagery captured by the weather observation satellite's panchromatic (black and white) and multi-spectral (color) cameras.

All the images sent by the satellite will be used for cartographic purposes, coastal land use and regulation, and urban and rural applications, besides Geographical Information System (GIS) applications.

    Background

Cartosat-2 went to space with 28 international satellites

The Cartosat-2 is an advanced remote sensing satellite just like the first six spacecraft in the series.

With it, scientists aim to augment data services to its users.

Notably, the earth observation satellite was sent to space along with 30 others, including 28 satellites from six foreign countries such as the US, France, Finland, and Canada.
