ISRO successfully undocks satellites, paving way for India's space station
What's the story
In a major achievement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully undocked two satellites as part of its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission.
The complex procedure involved a series of precise maneuvers which led to the separation of SDX-01 and SDX-02.
This is a key test for technologies needed in future space missions, including satellite repairs, India's space station, and exploration beyond Earth.
Procedure details
Successful execution of key maneuvers
The undocking process was characterized by a series of critical steps, including the successful extension of SDX-2 and the planned release and disengagement of Capture Lever 3 in SDX-2.
After these maneuvers, a decapture command was issued for both SDX-1 and SDX-2.
These actions resulted in their successful separation, showcasing ISRO's expertise in carrying out complex space operations.
Future plans
SpaDeX mission: A stepping stone for future endeavors
The successful undocking of the SpaDeX satellites paves the way for India's future space missions.
These include ambitious projects like the establishment of the Bharatiya Antriksh Station, Chandrayaan-4, and Gaganyaan program.
Launched on December 30, 2024, the SpaDeX mission aimed to demonstrate rendezvous, docking as well as undocking technologies crucial for these upcoming missions.
Global recognition
ISRO joins elite group of space agencies
The successful execution of the SpaDeX mission and its undocking process puts India among the global leaders in space technology.
This achievement puts India on par with the likes of the United States, Russia, and China in mastering such complex maneuvers.
The docking process earlier this year involved precise maneuvers where the satellites approached each other from a distance of 15m down to just 3m before secure docking.
