iPhone 16 Pro Max ranks 4th in DXOMARK camera rankings
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has secured the fourth position in DXOMARK's latest smartphone camera rankings. This placement is based on an extensive analysis of over 3,000 photos and 150 hours of video. Despite its overall ranking, the device outperformed all other smartphones in video recording capabilities. The top three positions were held by Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Honor Magic6 Pro, respectively.
iPhone 16 Pro Max's camera strengths and weaknesses
The iPhone 16 Pro Max excelled in several areas, including capturing images and videos of friends and family, maintaining a wide dynamic range across the entire zoom range, ensuring accurate white balance and natural color rendering. It also provided excellent levels of detail and texture in bright light conditions. The device's fast and accurate autofocus as well as effective video stabilization were also praised by DXOMARK.
Areas of improvement
Despite its strengths, the iPhone 16 Pro Max's camera did have some shortcomings. These included inconsistent detail across the zoom range and a lack of detail in ultra-wide photos. The device also struggled with a narrow depth of field that often resulted in out-of-focus background subjects in group shots. Additionally, unwanted artifacts such as flare, ghosting, ringing, and aliasing were noted during the testing process.
Best in color and preview accuracy
The DXOMARK tests evaluated 10 different criteria for still photography performance and seven for video. The iPhone 16 Pro Max emerged as the top-performing camera for color and preview accuracy. It also offered the best video capture performance in terms of color, noise, and stabilization. However, improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max were found to be modest with telephoto performance being particularly disappointing.
