iOS 18.1 first public beta arrives with Apple Intelligence features
Apple has launched the public beta version of its highly anticipated iOS 18.1, which incorporates several advanced generative artificial intelligence (AI) features. This release marks a significant step toward making Apple Intelligence widely accessible. The final versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 18.1 are expected to be released in the coming weeks, further expanding the reach of these innovative features to all compatible devices.
Public betas offer more stability than developer versions
The public beta versions of Apple's operating systems are typically more stable and less risky to install than their developer counterparts. However, users are advised to back up their data before installing this new version of iOS 18.1 on their iPhones. Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Apple Intelligence, but this will change as the new iPhone 16 series goes on sale today.
Apple Intelligence will be available for M-series iPads and Macs
In addition to the new iPhone series, M-series iPads and Macs will also be compatible with Apple Intelligence. However, at present, users must set their device and Siri language to US English to access these tools. Those wishing to use Apple Intelligence in other languages or localized versions of English may have to wait until December when operating systems supporting this feature are expected to be released.
Apple Intelligence features will be gradually rolled out
Apple plans a phased introduction of its Apple Intelligence tools over the coming months. The initial set includes features like transcribing phone calls and audio notes in the Notes app, summarizing key details, rewriting, proofreading and summarizing writing tools, email prioritization and smart replies. Other features include notification summaries and photo clean up capabilities. Users will also be able to create memories in the revamped Photos apps and interact with a redesigned Siri that now supports typed requests.
Upcoming features in Apple Intelligence
Some features such as ChatGPT integration, Genmoji, Image Playground (image generation), and an enhanced understanding of personal context by Siri will be rolled out in future updates. To access these new Apple Intelligence features on their iPhones, users need to navigate through Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select the iOS 18 public beta option. Once the iOS 18.1 public beta is available for their device, it will appear on the software update page.
