Apple prepares iOS 17.5 with option for web downloads
Apple's latest beta version of iOS 17.5 introduces a significant feature for iPhone users in the European Union - the ability to download apps directly from developers' websites. This new update eliminates the need for users to access the App Store or any other app marketplace for app acquisition. The feature, which has been under development since March, is now ready for user testing.
Apple sets guidelines for direct app downloads
To ensure user safety, Apple has set certain guidelines for developers who wish to offer their iOS apps on their websites. According to the tech giant, apps must undergo Apple's Notarization process, and developers need to be a member of the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more. These measures aim to maintain app quality and protect users from potential security risks.
Eligibility criteria for website app downloads
Apple has outlined specific eligibility criteria for apps to be downloaded directly from a website. Only apps that have had at least one million annual first installs in the EU the prior year are eligible. Developers meeting these requirements can use an API for web-based app downloads. According to Apple, apps downloaded through the web using the API can be backed up, restored, and updated as standard apps can.
User permissions and developer responsibilities
For an iPhone user in the EU to install an app from a website, they must explicitly allow that developer to install apps via their Settings. A system sheet will then provide details such as the app name, developer name, app description, screenshots and more. Developers are required to distribute apps only from their developer account and must publish clear data collection policies for user understanding.
Core technology fee for app developers
While there is no requirement for developers to share a percentage of app sales with Apple for apps distributed via websites, a Core Technology Fee of €0.50 is applicable for each annual install exceeding one million in the past 12 months. However, this fee is waived for non-profit organizations, accredited educational institutions, and government entities. This ensures that these organizations can distribute their apps without incurring additional costs, as per Apple.
