Apple's iMessage "problem" is actually a "feature", reveals Apple
Apple's iOS 12.0.1, like its previous iteration, is still sending iMessages to the wrong contacts.
So far, thousands of people have reported the issue on Apple forums but haven't found any respite.
According to a user contacted by Apple Support, the iMessage "problem" is actually an iOS 12 "feature" wherein Apple is merging chat threads if users share the same Apple ID.

Apple support has contacted me re this issue, they’ve confirmed this is an intended consequence of ios12, if you’re in the same appleID it doesn’t matter what phone number or email you have assigned in settings, it will combine our messages in an thread
