A mobile app to help old people remember medicine schedules
How many mobile apps can you name that cater exclusively to senior citizens? None? Neither could 17-year-old Aryaman Kunzru. So he developed one himself. Called Dawai Dost, this app solves one of the most common problems among oldies - that of remembering to take their medicines on time. It is especially of great use for older people in India. Here's why.
No more trouble with touchscreen or language
The app gives reminders through voice notifications, which means the elderly need not trouble themselves with touchscreens. More importantly, it gives out instructions in Hindi and Tamil, thus covering a large population of senior citizens that would have otherwise been excluded because of the language barrier. It also has audio tutorials to inform users about what needs to be done at each stage.
How does it work?
Users can either take a photo of the medicine or feed its name manually, and set the time of its daily consumption. Once done, the app will set an alarm to help them remember when they need to take their everyday dose. Through texts and voice messages, the app also informs when the medicines are about to expire.
Meet the guy behind Dawai Dost: Aryaman Kunzru
Kunzru studies in Class 12 at Canadian International School, Hong Kong. It was his grandmother's forgetfulness that inspired him to create Dawai Dost. Since he had no technical training, he learnt to build the app from online courses. It took him 14 months to develop the first version, which he completed in June. The app is now available on Google Play Store for use.
