This iMessage bug is lingering for years—Apple should fix it
What's the story
Apple's iMessage app has been dealing with a weird bug for years, especially when it comes to displaying images.
The issue occurs when an AVIF image file is sent through iMessage, not rendering properly.
The problem isn't platform-specific; it occurs on both iOS and macOS devices.
Although Apple added support for AVIF image files on Safari on iOS 16 over two years ago, the company hasn't extended it to its messaging service.
Viewing issue
Images are displayed in a small window
The bug doesn't just stop the image from being displayed, it also shows the AVIF image in a small window with no option to enlarge the preview. This creates a tiny image on the screen that can't be viewed properly.
Interestingly, users can see the AVIF image in the message send preview, making them believe that everything is working fine before sending an image.
Consistency
Remaining unviewable despite support in other apps
The inconsistency is especially annoying for users who can view AVIF images in Safari and Photos, but not in iMessage.
This difference puts users in a confusing situation where they send an image that can't be viewed properly on the recipient's end.
Apple is expected to address this issue soon, as it compromises the user experience of sending and receiving AVIF images via iMessage.
