Huawei receives patent for a foldable smartphone
Foldable displays are a thing of the future. But given how smartphone manufacturers are working towards achieving them, that future isn't too distant. Back in 2017, CEO Huawei, Richard Yu had revealed that the company was working on a foldable phone which could be released in 2018. Fast-forward to now, the company has received the patent for a foldable smartphone. Here's more.
What does the patent reveal about Huawei's foldable smartphone?
Going by the patent acquired by Huawei, the phone will have two displays and will fold from the middle. Huawei looks to have adopted a fold-in approach - the device when open would serve as a tablet and could be folded to form a phone.
From the prototype to this patent
Last year, Yu noted that their prototype foldable phone has a gap in the middle of the two screens, and that they are looking for a more flexible screen technology and better mechanical design to get rid of it. However, by that time, Huawei had already filed for the patent and hence the patent still features the tiny gap between the two displays.
ZTE already has a foldable phone, Samsung is readying one
Huawei is not alone when it comes to developing foldable smartphones. Last year, Chinese manufacturer ZTE had launched its Axom M smartphone, which is already available in the market and uses a fold-out approach. Likewise, Samsung is believed to have secretly unveiled its foldable phone, the Galaxy X, to a select few. Further, a report suggests that Apple is also developing a foldable iPhone.
