Huawei to launch smart TV with proprietary OS in August
Huawei is working to launch its first-ever smart TV in China with the company's proprietary HongMeng operating system, according to Chinese news portal Yicai Global. Reportedly, the upcoming television will be launched in August under the Honor brand and is likely to be dubbed as Honor Smart Screen. Here's all about it.
Everything we know about Huawei's first-ever smart TV
This smart TV will feature a 55-inch screen and we can expect the company to use an LED panel with 4K resolution. It will work as "the hub of control for internet-connected devices at home, as well as an entertainment center," the report said quoting Zhao Ming, President of the Honor brand.
Notably, TV usage in China has seen a drastic drop
With the ever-increasing number of smartphone users in China, TV sales have dropped drastically in the country. According to the report, the average daily usage of TV sets "dropped in three years from 70% to 30% while the profits of TV manufacturers decreased in tandem each year." However, Zhao hopes "that its TV will divert users' attention from their mobile phones".
Meanwhile, here's everything we know about HongMeng OS
To note, HongMeng OS, which was announced by Huawei soon after the US trade ban, is currently said to be in the development stage. The new OS will power a variety of devices including routers, network switches, tablets, data centers, smartphones, and even TVs. According to a recent Global Times report, the HongMeng OS will apparently be 60% faster than Android.
But, why is Huawei debuting HongMeng on a TV?
Considering HongMeng OS is being worked upon, it is logical for Huawei to showcase some features of the new OS on a TV. The reason? The company can iron out any bugs before it releases a phone powered by the HongMeng OS. Moreover, it is a good opportunity for the Chinese tech giant to kickstart app development for the new OS.
