    What's the story

Huawei has launched the Mate Xs in China as the sequel to the Mate X foldable phone that went official last year.

The new model, arriving as the tech giant's second foldable device, features a redesigned four-layer screen, an upgraded "falcon wing" hinge, top-of-the-line internals, and 5G support.

Moreover, unlike its predecessor, the Mate Xs will be available in some international markets as well.

    Design

Mate Xs retains the out-folding design of the Mate X

Design-wise, the Mate Xs is largely the same as the Mate X. The device still offers an out-folding design, a metallic frame, and a holdable "wing" that houses a physical fingerprint reader and quad-lens camera.

Further, the Mate Xs gets an upgraded hinge structure, a redesigned four-layer screen, and a flexible bionic graphite cooling system for balanced dissipation.

    Display

The handset offers an 8-inch QHD+ screen in unfolded stage

The display on the Mate Xs is same as its predecessor. The main flexible screen is an 8-inch AMOLED panel that offers 2480x2200 pixels resolution in the unfolded state. When folded, you get a 6.6-inch (2480x1148 pixels) front display and a 6.38-inch (2480x892 pixels) rear display.

Huawei has offered a Multi-window function that divides the 8-inch main screen into two for improved multi-tasking experience.

    Information

The handset sports a LEICA-engineered quad camera

The Mate Xs sports a LEICA-engineered quad rear camera setup including a 40MP (f/1.8) main sensor, 16MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens, 8MP (f/2.4, OIS) telephoto sensor, a Time-of-Flight (ToF) 3D camera. For selfies, the rear camera doubles as the front camera when the phone is folded.

    Internals

    Under the hood

The Huawei Mate Xs is powered by a Kirin 990 5G processor, paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It runs on Android 10-based EMUI 10 out-of-the-box. However, the handset does not have access to Google Play Store and other Google services.

Under the hood, it packs dual batteries to offer a combined battery of 4,500mAh and supports 55W SuperCharge technology.

    Information

    Pricing and availability

The Mate Xs is priced at €2,499 (around Rs. 1,95,000) for the solo 8GB/512GB model and it will go on sale in March. The handset will be released in markets outside China but there is no word on its availability in India.
