    What's the story

Samsung's DeX mode is a dedicated desktop mode that you can find on a number of Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Over the years, the feature has greatly improved to offer a bunch of new capabilities, allowing you to seamlessly switch between devices.

At present, there are a number of ways to access DeX and here's a quick guide to help you get started.

    Compatible devices

These Samsung devices support DeX mode

Not every Galaxy smartphone or tablet support the DeX mode. However, some of the latest smartphones including the Galaxy Note 10+, Note 10, Note 10 5G, Galaxy S10+, S10, S10e, and S10 5G do support DeX.

Further, the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9+, S9, Note 8, Galaxy S8+, S8, S8 Active, Galaxy Tab S6, Tab S5e, and Tab S4 also support the feature.

Using DeX on external display via USB-C cable or hub

Using a USB-C to HDMI adapter is one of the simplest ways to use DeX mode on any of the aforementioned devices. However, if you don't have wireless peripherals, use a fast charging-compatible USB-C hub wherein your keyboard can connect via USB-A.

Now, connect your device to the monitor's HDMI port and DeX should start automatically. Otherwise, trigger it from the drop-down notifications menu.

Use your device as a trackpad

In case you don't have a mouse to connect with your external display, you can use your phone's screen as a trackpad. Once you've successfully entered DeX mode, pull down the notification shade on your device and tap on Use your phone as a touchpad.

You can also connect via an official DeX Station/DeX Pad

Back in the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 days, DeX was available only via the DeX Station or DeX dock. Similarly, a DeX Pad was introduced for the Galaxy S9 series.

Interestingly, these DeX adapters function as USB hubs as well and can serve as a one-point solution.

To get started, simply connect the DeX Station/dock to your display via HDMI port.
