Got a new phone? Here's a quick data migration guide

    What's the story

Getting a phone is easy but setting it up with the data from the previous device - from photos to apps - might seem like a time-consuming task.

You may want to move everything but not know the exact way to do that.

However, worry not, we've got an easy guide to help you with the whole data transfer process.

    Let's take a look.

    Information

Things you need to do before starting migration

Before starting, back up all the data and settings on your old device (Android, iOS). Also, do note the ID-password for your Google and iCloud account on which the data will be backed up. Without it, you won't be able to move data.

    Android-Android

Moving data from old to new Android

If both your new and old phone run Android, migrating data would be easy.

Just select the option to bring data and tap on 'A Backup from an Android Phone' while setting up the new device.

After this, follow the instructions to launch the data migration setup on the old device, which would move your Google account with backed up data via Bluetooth.

    Information

What you'll have to do on the old phone

On the old phone, you'll have to launch the Google app and search for 'Setup my device'. This would launch a wizard which would scan for the new device via Bluetooth, verify the connection (with name, numbers, shapes), and then copy all backed up data.

    iPhone-Android

Moving data from iPhone to Android

For moving data from iOS to Android, select "an iPhone device" option while setting up the new phone.

Then, head to your old device (iPhone/iPad) and visit android.com/switch or Apple Store to download Google Drive.

Now, backup everything on Drive, including your contacts, photos, and videos, from its settings and sign in with the same account to get that data on the new device.

    Information

    Also, turn iMessage off

Also, do note that you'd have to turn iMessage and FaceTime off before ditching the old device and inserting its SIM into a new Android smartphone.

Moving data from old to new iPhone

First, you'll have to place your new iPhone next to the old one to get a prompt for setting up the former.

The new device will generate a pattern, which would have to be scanned from older model to pair the two devices.

Now, the old phone will continue the setup and migrate your iCloud, allowing you to restore data on the new device.

    Android-iPhone

Moving data from Android to iPhone

For moving data from Android to iOS, start with the regular iOS setup process on the new device and tap on 'Set Up Manually'.

Then, set up Wi-Fi and biometrics and tap on 'Move Data from Android' to get a six/ten digit code.

Now, download the 'Move to iOS' app on your old Android and enter the code from iPhone for instant data transfer.

    Information

'Move to iOS' will prompt you to select data type

When you'll enter the code, 'Move to iOS' will ask you to choose what data you'd want to move. Just select everything and hit 'Next' to start the transfer. Also, after completing the setup, iOS will prompt you to get iOS version of old apps.
