Now, ask Alexa devices to make Skype calls: See how
In a major upgrade, Amazon's Alexa-powered devices are getting Skype support from Microsoft. This means that now you can simply command your smart device to make instant audio/video calls to your friends or family - via Skype. The feature is available in 34 countries, including India, and also lets you call landline and mobile numbers. Here's how you can use it.
First, you should know about feature compatibility
Skype is coming to all Amazon Alexa devices, but it is important to note that not all of them will be able to make video calls. Specifically, all generations of smart speakers like Echo, Echo Plus, and Echo Dot will get support for hands-free voice calls. Meanwhile, those equipped with displays like Amazon Show and Echo spot would get video support for face-to-face interactions.
How to set up Skype on Alexa device?
To start making calls, you'll have to set up Skype on your Alexa device. For this, open Amazon's Alexa app on your Android or iOS phone and head over to the settings section. From there, go to 'Communication > Skype' to open the page for connecting your Skype account. Enter the credentials for your account and click 'Get started' to complete the process.
Now, all you have to do is command Alexa
Once the account is connected, you just have to command Alexa to start making calls. For instance, you can say "Alexa, call Mom on Skype" or "Alexa, Skype Mom" to make a call or "Alexa, pick up" to answer one. The service will try to call the contact regardless of the device they are using for Skype.
Also, you can call landline/mobile numbers
And, if the person you're trying to reach is not on Skype, you can use the service to call their landline or mobile number. This, as Microsoft describes, can be done by simply calling out the number of the person in question. For instance, try saying "Alexa, call 860*****012 on Skype". Skype to phone requires credit, but Microsoft is offering 200 free minutes.
Free Skype to phone offer details
Skype is giving away 100 minutes of free calls per month for two months as part of an initial offer for users linking their Skype account with Alexa. It can be used in India, but only for International calls.
