Want to get verified on Instagram? Here's a quick guide
Every social media user craves for that 'blue tick' of value on their profile, be it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. The tick represents a sign of authenticity and is given only to a small set of public figures, brands, or entities. Nobody knows how it is added, but thankfully, Instagram has a well-defined process of applying for one. Here's how it works.
The long-running 'verification' mystery
When Instagram started verification, we all thought having a massive chunk of followers is the key to get an account verified. But, over several years of Instagram's existence, it has been proven that many other, unknown factors also come into play in the game of verification. This is why accounts with a few thousand followers are verified, but others, heavily-followed ones are still not.
You can place verification request now
We can't tell what happens at Instagram for verifying an account, but we definitely know how you can try for the same. Unlike other platforms, the photo-sharing site has defined a clear-cut process for applying for verification. If you complete this process and meet Instagram's criteria for a verified account, your profile could be verified in a matter of days.
Here's what you have to do
Open the Instagram app on your Android or iOS device and head to the 'Settings' section from your profile. After this, tap the 'Request Verification' option, enter your Instagram username, full name, and the name by which you're known in the public. Finally, open the category drop down and select the industry that perfectly fits your profile - news, sports, music, or others.
Next, upload government-issued ID on the platform
After entering the particulars, upload a government-issued document on the same page and hit the 'Send' button to finish placing the verification request. Instagram doesn't clearly say what would be the use of these documents but notes that the ID should have your name and date of birth. As such, it could be anything - your passport, driver's license or even a utility bill.
Important things to keep in mind before applying
The application process is easy, but you have to keep in mind that applying doesn't mean approval. Instagram would review your request on the basis of authenticity, uniqueness, completeness, and notability of your profile. It should be public, updated with a bio and have atleast one post, and belong to a real 'well-known' or 'highly searched' person, brand, or entity, according to the company.
So, if you're notable enough, go for it
That said, if you're an unverified influencer/public figure/business with a well-built audience, you can go for the verification request right away. However, if you're a regular user with a few hundred followers and no 'notability', you might have to build a base before applying.
