Want to enable dark mode on Chrome? Here's the way
Google has launched Chrome 74, the latest version of its browser, for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The new iteration comes with some notable improvements and bug fixes, including the much-awaited dark mode. However, the sad part is, the dark mode is being rolled out only for select users, which means you will have to enable it manually. Here's the way to do that.
How the dark mode works
While MacOS users have been enjoying dark mode since Chrome 73, Windows users will get the capability in the latest version. However, it doesn't work with some sort of setting that you have to enable to turn the browser's UI dark. Chrome's new dark mode ties to the 'Colors' settings in Windows 10; if you switch it to dark, Chrome will also turn dark.
However, you can enable it manually
Chrome's dark mode setting cannot be enabled but you can force it through a specific set of steps highlighted by The Verge. Basically, you will have to head over to the properties of the Chrome icon you use to launch the browser and type in "--force-dark-mode" (without quotes) towards the end of the target location field.
Dark mode is coming for select users at the moment
Chrome's dark mode is being rolled out for select few users, but these particular steps will help you get it immediately. It's also worth noting that you'll have to re-launch the browser after changing the properties to get the dark theme. And, if you use a pinned Chrome tab from the taskbar, you'll have to unpin and pin it again post the change.
Note: Dark mode won't recolor web pages
Having said that, it's also imperative to note that enabling the dark mode doesn't mean that the browser recolor web page elements. It will give an incognito-like look to the interface of the browser, turning its Omnibox, Bookmarks Bar, three-dot overflow menu, new tab page, and main settings dark. Meanwhile, all other pages, including loaded websites, well remain white.
How to get Chrome 74
To get Chrome 74, head over to the 'About Chrome' section from 'Settings' to initiate the download. Once it gets completed, restart the browser to apply the update.
