What's the story
Recently, several Facebook users reported a weird Messenger bug, one that kept surfacing chats from the past.
The issue led many to think that their accounts have been compromised, while others were struck by messages they never wanted to see again.
Facebook acknowledged the issue after multiple reports and has now issued a fix.
Here's all you need to know about it.
The issue
Backstory: Years-old chats kept popping up
According to various Twitter reports, the bug automatically pulled up chats from months and sometimes even years ago.
It affected the Messenger tab on Facebook's website and surfaced the old message threads as new, unread ones.
As one could expect, many users had to deal with the memories they wanted to forget like conversations from a sour relationship or messages from a deceased partner.
Twitter Post
Here's what one Twitter user said
Thank you @facebook for sending me notifications of messages sent over a year old. Many were from the day my partner, Dean, passed away now I've spent my evening in fear of what else I'm going to see.

Facebook's action
However, the glitch has now been fixed
While many users were spooked by the old messages, Facebook was pretty quick to fix the bug, which appeared to be a code-related issue.
After fixing the problem, the social network apologized for the mistake.
"The issue, caused by software updates, has been fully resolved. We're sorry for any inconvenience," a spokesperson from the company told The Verge.
Previous mistake
Facebook has jarred users before as well
The bug stemmed from a software update, but it is important to note that this isn't the first time Facebook is jarring users like this.
Some three years ago, the social network's 'On This Day' memory recalling feature misfired and pulled painful memories for many users.
It failed to recognize the difference between what's cheerful posts and those related to tragedies.
