Health revolution to be spurred by Artificial Intelligence
With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automated programs, robots are set to play a key rule in detecting health conditions and finding cures, reports said. Backed by some of the latest technology, robots are inching their way into diagnosing strokes, identifying depression and much more. Researchers have also helped develop an algorithm that would predict heart attacks better than conventional doctors.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Artificial Intelligence revolves around the science of making computers perform actions that otherwise require human intelligence and cognitive ability to perform. These computers are programmed to learn and mimic human interactions to perform the action.
Which sectors use AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been of impressive use to various sectors, from retail and consumer sector, to law, finance and the advertising fields. Actions have been taken to help implement AI to replace financial advisors, with computers having the ability to sift through thousands of companies and provide recommendations. AI has also been actively introduced in building autonomous cars.
What about healthcare?
One of the biggest innovations within AI was to help reboot the broken healthcare system, and churn better medical decision-making. Experts soon predict that AI and big data will help users to self-diagnose, and even forecast the probability of contracting a particular disease.
What triggered this exciting wave of innovation?
"I think a tipping point was when Apple released its Research Kit," says Kate McCarthy, an analyst, referring to a project where Apple let users enable data from daily activities in medical studies. A large pool of investments from Silicon Valley has contributed heavily, too.
AI helps better important healthcare segments
AI can be used to obtain and glean information from the existing database to help predict health conditions six months into the future. NYU researchers accurately predicted dozens of type 2 diabetes, heart or kidney failure, and stroke with the use of AI. Google is using AI to analyze tissues and help determine the likelihood of breast cancer and develop radiotherapy treatments.
What do patients feel about usage of AI in healthcare?
"People are cautious about the complexities surrounding their personal information, especially where these may not have been explained to them in the past. We must make sure that there are no surprises for people about how their data could be used, " an analyst said.
