TikTok launches group chat feature to rival WhatsApp
TikTok has introduced a new group chat feature, allowing up to 32 users to communicate within the app. This update is available for users aged 16 and above, enabling them to share content with friends and family members, without opening a separate messaging platform. The introduction of group chats, positions TikTok as a competitor to popular messaging services like Meta's WhatsApp.
How to start a group chat?
To initiate a group chat, users must select the Inbox button, tap Chat, choose their friends, and click "Start group chat." However, there are certain limitations. Users can only join a group chat if they're invited by people they follow back. If a user has disabled messaging on their account, they won't receive any invitations.
Group chat rules for teens
TikTok has implemented specific rules for users under 18. Teens can only join a group chat if it includes at least one person who follows them back. Additionally, teens who create a group chat must manually review and approve people who join. This measure is part of TikTok's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for its younger users on the platform.
Custom stickers introduced
Alongside group chats, TikTok is introducing custom stickers that users aged 18 and above can create and upload. The company views this as a fun addition to the chat feature.
