GoPro unveils 'karma' drone and new cameras
GoPro unveiled its much anticipated drone 'Karma', along with two new Hero5 cameras, the next in line of its portable action cameras. Karma, priced at $799, is a foldable drone that fits into a backpack. It can carry either of the GoPro's two signature camera lines - Hero4 and Hero5. The drone also has a removable stabilizer, that can be detached for handheld use.
The GoPro beginnings
GoPro was founded by Nick Woodman in 2002 and debuted its first camera in 2004. Nick's idea for GoPro came during a surf trip when he wanted to capture action shots but couldn't find right camera. He then set out to design an on-the-go camera and made a deal with a Chinese manufacturer to modify their camera, and thus the first GoPro was born.
GoPro products
GoPro product line ranges from its signature action wearable Cameras, to video editing software to mounting accessories. GoPro integrates with mobile devices through the GoPro app.
Karma vs. its rivals
With Karma, GoPro made its entry into drone market and hopes to 'distinguish itself in an increasingly competitive market for mini-cameras.' Bundled with Hero5 Black, Karma at $1099 is $100 less than the market leader DJI's Phantom 4. The latter has collision-avoidance sensors, which Karma lacks. Karma is also cheaper than Yuneec Typhoon H ($1299) which too has the advanced automated obstacle avoidance technology.
GoPro Plus cloud service
At the California launch event, GoPro also announced the company's new video sharing cloud service, GoPro Plus. At $4.99-a-month subscription, the camera automatically uploads video and pictures to the cloud service.
The new waterproof voice controlled Hero5 cameras
GoPro's new lineup of action cameras include Hero5 Session and Hero5 Black. Hero5 Black is a 4k camera with touchscreen, video stabilization and built-in GPS, priced at $399. Hero5 Session has similar features in a smaller package sans the touchscreen and costs $299. Both are water resistant and feature voice control allowing users to take photos or videos by simply talking to their devices.
