Android 15 will predict lifespan of your phone's storage chip
Google is developing a new feature for Android that will provide users with information about the health of their phone's storage, as highlighted by Android Authority. This information was revealed in a recent AOSP (Android Open Source Project) which sets up work for a new API, that will display the health of a storage space as a percentage, based on indicators from UFS chips.
It could be introduced in Android 15 update
The storage health feature is not yet part of Android, but similar work was observed in Android 15 Beta 1, indicating Google's progress toward its implementation. The timeline for the release of the storage health feature remains uncertain. However, it seems plausible that it could be included in Android 15. Google does not mandate other Android OEMs to implement this feature, leaving its availability beyond Pixel devices unclear.
Round up values for storage health indication
The latest development comes as smartphones are increasingly being used for extended periods, leading to more frequent component failures. While Android already collects storage health data, the new API in the recent AOSP would make this data visible to system apps, like the Settings menu. Also, when showing storage health on various devices, it would accurately round up the values.
