Google's Gemini AI chatbot is coming to your car soon
Google is developing new features for its Android Auto platform, including enhanced support for "local media" and potential compatibility with Gemini Live, according to 9to5Google. The tech giant has been working on some of these updates since July, with a focus on enabling users to control their car's radio directly through Android Auto. The latest versions of the app have revealed more about these upcoming features.
Android Auto's new features: A closer look
The recent Android Auto 12.7 update has hinted at the ability to add and remove "Favorite" stations via an app on the platform. The latest beta version of Android Auto 12.8 has introduced information about using "Car Local Media" through the service. However, these features are not yet live for users. In addition to these updates, icons for both radio and local media playback have been added in recent versions of the app.
Voice-activated features for in-car use
Google is also seemingly preparing to integrate Gemini Live support into Android Auto. A new string in the app's code directly references a codename associated with Gemini and the ability to "start conversation." However, this feature is not yet live either. The term "kitt_live" has been used by Google in relation to Gemini Live, indicating that this update may involve voice-activated features for in-car use.
Gemini Live's debut and future plans
Gemini Live made its debut earlier this month alongside the Pixel 9 series, and is currently being rolled out to Android users (in English) with Gemini Advanced. The exact timeline for when Google plans to launch the new features for Android Auto remains unclear. However, given the ongoing issues with Google Assistant on the platform, it's not surprising that an upgrade involving Gemini is in progress.
