Google's new feature will allow smartwatches to control phone audio
Google is working on a feature that will allow Android smartwatches to control smartphone audio output settings. Currently, Android users can switch their audio output to a different source via their phones, thanks to Google's system that enables fast audio transfer between devices using Chromecast or Spotify Connect. The tech giant is now developing a "media routing control" for Android, which would function as an app permission, and let apps on your phone determine the destination of the audio output.
Google explains the new feature
Google has provided further details on the upcoming "media routing control" feature. The company explained that this permission would allow smartwatches, through companion apps, to control the routing of applications running on the phone. This new feature was first revealed by Android Authority. It will enable an app on your device to access a list of available gadgets, and control which one streams/casts audio or video from other apps.
What about its availability?
The exact timeline for the rollout of this innovative feature remains uncertain. Google clarified that the permission "allows [an] app to choose which connected device plays audio or video from other apps." There are speculations that this functionality might be included in the upcoming Android 15 release.
