Google's new Apple TV 4K rival looks like set-top box
Google has introduced its latest streaming device, the Google TV Streamer, priced at $99.99 (roughly ₹7,500) in the US. This new device that looks like a set-top box, is an upgrade from the Chromecast, and is packed with enhanced features such as Thread and Matter integration, and a remote finder. Unlike its predecessor that was a dongle, this Apple TV 4K rival will require users to supply their own HDMI cable when it becomes available on September 24.
Design and color options
The Google TV Streamer will be available in two color variants: porcelain (white) and hazel (dark gray). The latter is exclusive to the Google Store. Unlike the Chromecast that was designed to be concealed behind your television, this new device is intended to sit beneath it. This design change is due to the inclusion of a Thread border router, and connectivity support for Matter in the device.
Features and performance
The Google TV Streamer allows users to access a Google Home panel on their television screen with a single button press on the remote. This feature enables easy control over smart home devices and cameras from the comfort of their couch. The device also includes Gemini AI features and hardware upgrades like an in-built Ethernet jack, a processor that is 22% faster, double the RAM, and 32GB of integrated storage.
Remote and AI facilities
The remote that comes with the Google TV Streamer has been redesigned, moving volume buttons to the front and adding a customizable button. A remote finder button is also included on the back of the device that emits a beeping sound when pressed, helping users locate their remote easily. On the software side, Gemini AI provides viewers with "full summaries, reviews, and season-by-season breakdowns of content" as they browse through shows or movies.
Smart home controls and availability
The Google TV Streamer offers a wider range of smart home controls compared to the Chromecast line. It has a built-in Thread border router for easy communication with other devices in your house, and supports Matter. The device also has its own version of the Google Home panel, simplifying tasks like adjusting smart lights or viewing feeds from security cameras and video doorbells. Pre-orders for the device are now open, with official sales starting on September 24.
